Gain a deep understanding of the community support sector in Aotearoa/New Zealand and its role within the broader health system.
You’ll learn how to address the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals and their families while also developing the cultural intelligence needed to support people from diverse backgrounds with sensitivity and respect.
The only items you require to complete this study is a laptop and reliable internet connection. Studies are available to NZ Citizens and Residents Only!
Work experience requirement
In order to complete these studies, students must be working in a Community Support / Support Worker role for a minimum of 6 hours weekly to meet the work experience obligations of this qualification!

Course Delivery
This course is offered online, your learning will be based from home, using online materials.
You are also required to attend an online workshop
Full-time students are required to attend these online each Wed from 1.30pm – 3.00pm.
Part-time students are required to attend these online every second Wed from 3.00pm – 4.30pm.
Course Details
What you will learn:
- Holistic wellbeing (whare tapa whā)
- New Zealand health and wellbeing sector legislation, regulations and codes
- Cultural competency and effective communication skills
- Recognise and respond to changing needs and issues in a health and wellbeing setting including signs of vulnerability and abuse
- Provide person-centred health and wellbeing support to maximise a person’s independence
Graduates will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and codes in a health and wellbeing setting to provide health and wellbeing services in an ethical and professional manner.
- Recognise and respond to signs of vulnerability and abuse in a health or wellbeing setting.
- Communicate effectively in a culturally appropriate manner to support a person’s health or wellbeing.
- Provide culturally appropriate person-centred health and wellbeing support to maximise a person’s independence.
- Recognise and respond to signs of functional, behavioural, environmental or other health or wellbeing change in a person, in a home or community setting.

Entry Criteria
In order to complete these studies the student must be working in a Community Support / Support Worker role for a minimum of 6 hours weekly to meet the work experience obligations of this qualification!
- Students Must be a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Must be 16 years or older
Must have basic Literacy & Math’s Skills (NZCEA Level 2 English or School Certificate English). - Must have basic computer skills
- Access to a devices (such as laptop or desktop and WIFI)
- Must be able to pass a police check.
- Any medical conditions need to be declared.
Where transfer of credit for previous study is being applied for, the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Form must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the Semester start date.
